Merry Christmas, by J. V. Foix

… i tot en Vós. Tants de cors, i una Mare,
I Un sol Infant entre tots, i a l’estiba
De tants de reis, Una corona viva;
Un Arbre al cim, brogent, que res no assola,
I ombra la llar de tots quan l’Hora arriba,
I en astres, fars i esguards. Una llum sola.

«Tot és ací» (fragment), El Port de la Selva, 1949

This is the title of the thesis that Sergi Castellà-Martínez, PhD student at Pompeu Fabra University, presented in June of this year, which deals with Foix’s reception, interpretation and appropriation of Lullian material.
Some aspects of Ramon Llull’s Ars are indispensable elements in the Foixian configuration of poetic work, understood as “research in poetry.” The Lullian method of “finding truth” is discovered from the incursions of J. V. Foix as a paradigm and example of the realistic ideal towards which poetry must tend. The study deals with exposing the congruence of the overall purpose of the poet’s work in relation to the assimilation and variation of Lullian techniques and themes.

About the Gertrudises

The name of Gertrudis is present in the prose poems of J. V. Foix. It already appears in the “Poema de Sitges”, published in the magazine Terramar (1919-1920) and is the title of his first book, published in 1927. In the books that make up the Diari 1918 Gertrudis disappears and reappears in the last one, Cròniques de l’ultrason(1985).

In one of the journeys in Mercè Rodoreda’s Viatges i flors, a little girl explains to the narrator that when one girl gets lost, in the village they give a doll the lost girl’s name and they make it into the patron saint of the village. The girl in question ends up saying: “My name is Gertrudis”. More than a wink from Rodoreda to Foix, it’s a nudge, says Enric Casasses in the Quadern on El País of October 7.

J. V. Foix in Joguets i escriptors

The book, which came out in 2022 at the initiative of Biblioteques de Barcelona, commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Toy Museum of Catalonia. Julià Guillamon brings us closer to the classics of literature from surprising points of view. In the case of J. V. Foix, we find the Numancia plane, from Casa Rico, a photograph in which he appears with a group of people in front of the Aeroclub de Barcelona plane and, all this, accompanied by one sonnet “Pistes desertes, avingudes mortes” (“Desert tracks, dead avenues”), which he published in the book KRTU in 1932.

On Sunday 17 September, in front of the current Hotel Porto Cristo, former Vergés house, in Port de la Selva, the Association la Pedra d’Amarra, dedicated to the preservation of heritage, paid tribute to the journalist, politician, writer and translator Joaquim Ventalló Vergés (Terrassa, 1899 – Barcelona, 1996).
His children Eulàlia and Joan and representatives of the Port Council, the Josep Irla Foundation and the Catalan Association of Tintinarires 1001 took part in it.

Foix compiled for number 11 of the magazine Serra d’Or in 1960 and which also appear in the book documents propis i texts d’altri, published by the Fundació J V. Foix and Edicions 62.

«Foix Lorca, geni i duende»

The professor of Catalan Literature Andreu Pérez-Mignorance writes, on his blog Lletres Bàrbares, an article in which he compares the poetic proses of J. V. Foix and those of García Lorca, specifically Gertrudis and KRTU, in the first case, and Poeta en Nueva York, in the second. Both have a great command of words and experiment with surrealism.
